Special Needs

Since the founding of the Boy Scouts of America in 1910, it has had the mission of developing youth of this country through its programs. Over the decades new and innovative programs have been added to meet the needs of a changing society while remaining firmly grounded in the principles of the Scout Oath and Law.

In the fall of 1993, the Great Trail Council began the Special Needs Scouting Division. These programs strive to bring Scouting to youth with physical or mental challenges, who might not be reached by a traditional Scouting unit. These programs are Scouting for Youth with Special Needs and In-School Scouting

The Special Needs Scouting Division works with local schools and area organizations to establish Scouting programs, train leaders and coordinate activities. By doing this, it fulfills its mission of developing youth of this country while creating a safe, fun and exciting learning atmosphere.

Special Needs Scouting programs teach youth to:

  • Participate to the best of their ability
  • Plan, start and complete a project
  • Develop leadership skills
  • Recognize their own and others' achievements
  • Try new things
  • Play fairly and have fun
  • Respect the differences of others
  • Develop and maintain friendships

When Special Needs youth participate in Scouting, they also experience the fulfillment of those basic needs which they may not experience if it were not for Scouting.
