American Veterinary Medical Association
Explorer Award
PURPOSE
The principles and purposes of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) are to
further the professional advancement of veterinary medicine and to ensure that each
verterinarian: "... uses scientific knowledge and skills for the nefefit of society
through the protection of animal health, the relief of animal suffering, the conservation
of livestock resources, the promotion of public health, and the advancement of medical
knowledge." To carry out this purpose, the AVMA is sponsoring this recognition
program to enourage young adults in veterinary programs who pursue these responsibilites.
HOW TO APPLY
To be considered for the annual AVMA Explorer Award and Explorer must:
Be a currently registered Explorer.
Have made a significant local, state, or national contribution in the fields of: animal
health, biomedical research, comparative medicine, food animal health, public health or
been involved in or initiated a citizenship project related to these areas.
Be in the upper 30 percent of your class.
Demonstrate an ability to work and communicate effectively with others.
Write a 1,000 work essay describing your projec.
Submit three letters of recommendation, one of which must be from the post Advisor.
SELECTION PROCEDURE
One national applicant may be selected by each BSA council.this selection will be made by
a volunteer committee. The volunteer committee will include representatives of the BSA
council and representatives of state and local veterinary medical associations.
The volunteer committee will screen all applications and select a winner based upon the
post's record. The local countil Exploring committee should recognize the local winners
and notify local media of its national applicant. Each countil's application must be
sumitted to the Exploring Division, S210 at the national office, no later than March 31 of
each year.
The national winners will be selected in May by a national selection committee that
includes representatives of the National Exploring Committee and the American Veterinary
Medical Association. Local council winners may be asked to submit additional or
supplemental career or project information to the national selection committee.

February 1. Applications submitted to local BSA countil service center
March 31. National winner applications from each BSA countil due in national

Questions concerning the program should be referred first to your local countil service
center and then to the National Exploring Division, BSA.
PRESENTATION
The award will be presented by a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association
Executive Broad at a regular meeting of the recipient's post.
The AVMA Explorer Award consists of a plaque and $500 cash award to the individual.
