and Northern Wayne Counties
SPONSOR/ADVISOR INFORMATION
Exploring Sponsorship has many benefits.........
"... I've been an Advisor for just over four years now and have had many rewarding experiences..... it is nice to know that in the short amount of time that Explorers are here, I am able to teach them things that they can use their entire life.... The program has been a great benefit to the department."
Doug Huffman
Copley Fire Department
"It's not a lot of time and busy work for an Advisor. The students will actually show other student how to operate as a member of the post, while becoming friends in the process. They look to the Advisors as role models to emulate by seeking our guidance, and above all, Advisors and Explorers have fun. The cost is only a small fraction compared to the reward that comes from helping an Explorer begin a career."
John Wasik
Stow Police Department
"We have attracted students of extrememly high caliber that are very mature and enthusiastic about the program... I strongly believe Exploring is a much needed and worthwhile program for youth thinking about career plans.... it is apparent that there are benefits for the adult volunteers as well.... I have noticed interacting with young people is very rejuvenating and renews our interests and ideals."
Eric Mundy
Summit County Children Services
"Initially, I was a little hesitant to get involved due to my busy schedule, but it has proved to be an extremely rewarding experience that has been well worth my time.. the commitment is minimal and is far outweighed by the opportunity to work with young people as they plan their future... I would not hesitate to encourage others to become Exploring Advisors.
Brian Pierce
Attorney at Law
What is a Sponsor or Advisor?
The Sponsor is an organization that supports and Exploring Post. For example, a computer
center could design an Exploring program in computers and invite Explorer-age youth
interested in data processing to join. The sponsor is responsible for recruiting competent
adult leaders such as Advisors and the Sponsor's representative; providing an adequate
meeting place; providing program resources such as facilities and materials or assistance
to organize successful projects and service opportunities; and conducting an annual
meeting with the council Exploring Executive to review post progress.
The Advisor to the Explorer post is the single most important individual involved in the
program. He or she, more important than anyone else, represents the post to potential
members. He or she advises and coaches the post's elected officers and participates in
most if not all post activities. It is essential that the Advisor be someone with whom
young people can relate to easily. He or she should be in touch with current trends in the
subject matter of the post field of interest and be able to discuss with the members the
subject which they are most interested in.
The post Advisor should be a person of good character and with the organizational skills
necessary to coordinate the general post program. The minimum age of any Advisor is 21.
Associate advisors may be 18.
